Founded in 1966 by the late Val Blomfield and his son Colin, Blomfield Signs quickly established itself as one of Auckland’s leading traditional signwriting companies. The business became known for its dedication to quality and detail, producing hand-painted signage for local businesses, vehicles, and events across the region.
In 1990, the torch was passed to Jonathan Maitland, a talented signwriter who had begun his apprenticeship at Blomfield Signs 39 years ago. Under his leadership, the business continued to uphold the traditions of hand-crafted excellence while embracing modern materials and technologies. Jonathan’s commitment to training and mentorship has been a cornerstone of Blomfield’s success – with many of the team, including long-standing craftsman Zane Neil, having trained through the company’s in-house apprenticeship programme.
Now, a new generation has stepped forward.
Jonathan’s son, Hugh Maitland, is proudly continuing the Blomfield legacy. After training under his father and refining his own skills in both traditional and contemporary signwriting techniques, Hugh leads a fresh team of talented young signwriters. With an eye for design and a deep respect for the roots of the craft, Hugh is driving Blomfield Signs into the future – blending time-honoured methods with innovative technologies to deliver exceptional signage for the modern world.
